Mortal May Cry

"He never understood that touching me with his greedy hands was not enough for me. I needed words. I wanted words. I wanted his hands on my hips and his words on my paper."

The Baddha Sirsasana I was too afraid to attempt earlier because of my sore neck. The shirtless yoga photograph I’ve always avoided because of my self-esteem issues, but was finally inspired to take thanks to @michikomichelle42 and several glasses of wine celebrating my father’s birthday. The body that I’ve struggled to love but have come to value beyond words over the course of this incredible journey I’ve taken thus far. The tattoo on @madonna’s back that so poetically reminded me that we are indeed not the body alone, and that physical expression is an immensely powerful thing. The yoga practice and the people who have taught me so much about what it means to me to live according to my own values. No fear.

That poem was fun to wrestle around with.

The challenge I gave myself for “ELOPE” was to write without going back to fix autocorrect on my phone. While I usually go back to change words into what I’d intended to write, sometimes the poem takes a whole new direction because of autocorrect, so I decided to just go with it this time. (After all, I wouldn’t have come up with “Poets & Ports” if it weren’t for autocorrect and I love how that turned out.) Anyhow, that’s how I ended up with lines like “suns denied their set.” Truly fun stuff.

So, here’s to letting go, going with the flow, and letting your poem write you, rather than you writing your poem :).

From the mat onto paper, from the eyes to the heart and back again.

Much love,
G

Comments on “ELOPE” and Thoughts on Autocorrect

"Start where you are. This is very important. Meditation practice is not about later, when you get it all together and you’re this person you really respect. You may be the most violent person in the world—that’s a fine place to start. That’s a very rich place to start—juicy, smelly. You might be the most depressed person in the world, the most addicted person in the world, the most jealous person in the world. You might think there are no others on the planet who hate themselves as much as you do. All of that is a good place to start. Just where you are—that’s the place to start."
